Friday AMV #3 - Past to present: Mobile Suit Gundam

Mobile Suit Gundam is, hands down, one of the biggest anime franchises out there.  Before it started branching off into alternate universes, all of its series were set in the Universal Century (UC), from UC 0000 (the prologue of Gundam Unicorn) to UC 0153 (Victory Gundam).  Within those 153 years, the most well known are the 14 years between UC0079/0080 (Mobile Suit Gundam, 08th MS Team, 0080) and 0093 (Char's Counterattack).

And so, this week's first AMV: UC Gundam (0079-0093): Konnamon Janai

The bonus AMV for the week is a second Gundam anthology, which expands the used shows further out in the UC universe and the AU series. This also serves as a little Japanese lesson.  The song used here is a redone version of Ai Senshi, the theme of the second Mobile Suit Gundam movie, and one of the most iconic anime songs out there.  If you've paid attention to your anime, you've probably heard "ai" before and know it as meaning "love".  However, if written with a different kanji, 愛 (ai, "love") becomes 哀 (ai, "sorrow").  And so, this song is properly translated as Soldiers of Sorrow.

And for a second bonus, because we're on the subject now, Ai Senshi is another song that had a surprisingly good English translation.

If you could identify and name at least 95% of the mobile suits that showed up in these AMVs, congratulations. You're as into it as I am.
